Maternity Expense Estimator
Budget your total maternity spend — prenatal, delivery (normal or C-section), postnatal, and first-year baby care — across metro, tier-2, and tier-3 cities. Includes insurance-coverage impact.
Estimate Your Total Maternity Cost
What Does Maternity Cost in India?
Maternity spend covers prenatal care (₹20,000-40,000 over 9 months), delivery (₹5,000 at a government hospital to ₹4 lakh at a metro corporate hospital), and postnatal + first-year baby care (₹80,000-3 lakh depending on city and lifestyle). A full package can range from ₹1.5 lakh at a semi-private tier-2 hospital to ₹8 lakh+ for a corporate C-section in a metro.
Insurance can dramatically reduce out-of-pocket outlay, but requires a maternity rider bought at least 9-48 months before delivery due to waiting periods. Verify your policy specifics with your insurer or on the IRDAI website.
How the Estimate Is Calculated
The estimator applies three multipliers to base delivery costs and adds fixed prenatal / postnatal budgets:
Delivery Cost = Base × Hospital Tier × City Multiplier
Total Medical = Delivery + Prenatal + Postnatal
Insurance Covers = min(Total Medical, Policy Coverage)
Out-of-Pocket = Total Medical − Insurance Covers (plus 10% buffer if selected)
Example: Normal delivery at a semi-private metro hospital = ₹60,000 × 1 × 1.3 = ₹78,000. Plus ₹25,000 prenatal + ₹1 lakh postnatal = ₹2.03 lakh total medical. With ₹3 lakh maternity cover, out-of-pocket drops to ₹0 (or 10% buffer only).

How to Reduce Your Maternity Bill
- Buy a maternity rider early — waiting periods run 9-48 months; plan at least 2 years before conception.
- Ask for a package deal — most private hospitals offer flat-rate normal-delivery packages that cap OT, room, and nursing costs.
- Verify empanelment — for cashless claims, confirm the hospital is on your insurer's network list.
- Use ESIC — if your gross wage is ≤ ₹21,000, ESIC covers delivery + medical bonus. See our Maternity Leave Salary Calculator.
- Government schemes — PMJAY, Janani Suraksha Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana offer significant support for eligible families.
- Buy essentials second-hand — cribs, strollers, car seats are used briefly; family or verified second-hand marketplaces save 50-70%.
- Emergency buffer — keep an extra 15-20% aside for NICU care, extended stay, or unforeseen medical needs.
